As a young man Frederick, who liked to be called Fred, worked in the shipyards of Plymouth, Devon, England. He emigrated to the United States when he was twenty-one years old. He arrived at Ellis Island on October 26, 1916 on the ship Bermudian out of Hamilton, Bermuda. He settled in Brooklyn and earned his living selling auto parts.

Fred and Julia moved to New Jersey c.1936 when their son Richard was about seventeen and purchased the Pine Tree Cottages Motel, which they operated until Richard bought them out in the early 1950’s. Fred and his wife subsequently moved to the hills of Pennsylvania (Breezewood, PA) where they owned and operated Motel 126 until the state bought them out so that a new highway could be built. Fred died in 1961. He and Julia are buried in the Pleasant Plains Cemetery, South Middlebush Road, Kendall Park, New Jersey.
