William John eventually rose to the rank of company sergeant major. William’s military career included postings to various parts of the world. These included Gibraltar, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and South Africa, prior to the Boer War. Upon return to England, William committed suicide, on February 17, 1900 at age thirty-nine. A coroner’s inquest ruled that this occurred during temporary insanity.
