Details of Furnace No. 1 erected at the Crane Iron Works in Catasauqua, Pa., 1839 – 40. Its design was based on the work performed at the Ynescidwyn Works in Wales by David Thomas. The story of the building of the Crane Iron Works was given by David’s son, Samuel Thomas, at a meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1899.
