STUDENT FIRE CHIEF KILLED

LEHIGH JUNIOR LOSES LIFE WHILE FIGHTING A FACTORY BLAZE
--------------
District Fire Chief Franklin T W Lazarus, aged 20, lost his life when overcome by smoke in an elevator, while fighting a fire at 1:30 o'clock Sunday morning, in the three story cigar factory of Vetterlein Brothers, No 1 South Bethlehem. He was found unconscious by other firemen and rushed to St Luke's Hospital, where death ensued shortly afterward. The fire was confined to the basement of the factory, which had not been in operation for some time.

Young Lazarus was a son of Mr and Mrs Frank G Lazarus. He was a member of the Junior class at Lehigh University, and had just passed his examinations for another term. Fire-fighting was his hobby, and he usually was one of the first members of the department to respond to fire alarm's. Sunday's blaze was the twenty-second fire Bethlehem has had since New Year's.
