Misc. Notes
ADAM ORTH b. March 9, 1733, in Lebanon township, Lancaster, now Lebanon county, Pa.; d. November 15, 1794, in Lebanon township; buried in Hebron Moravian graveyard, near Lebanon, Pa. He was brought up amid the dangers and struggles of Pennsylvania pioneer life; received the limited education of the "back settlements," and yet, by self-culture and reading, became a man well-informed and of more than ordinary intelligence. During the French and Indian war he commanded the Lebanon township company in Rev. John Elder's ranging battalion. In 1769 he was one of the commissioners of the county of Lancaster. During the Revolution he was early identified with the movement, and, although well advanced in years, assisted in the organization of the associated battalions, and was appointed sub-lieutenant of the county March 12, 1777. Upon the formation of the county of Dauphin he served as a representative in the General Assembly in 1789 and 1790. He was opposed to the adoption of the Federal Constitution, and took an active part in the Harrisburg Conference of 1788. For a long period he operated and owned New Market forge, which, at his death, he bequeathed to his son, Henry. One of the pioneers in the manufacture of iron in Lebanon county, a man of energy and indomitable perseverance, we are glad to preserve this record of him and his services. Colonel Orth m., May 24, 1757, by Rev. George Weiser, ANNA CATHARINA KUCHER, b. January 12, 1738; d. September 17, 1794; daughter of Peter and Barbara Kucher, of Lebanon township, Lancaster county, Pa
