John Sherer was born July 5, 1791, and lived and died at Sherersville, in Whitehall Township, this county. He was a man of culture, refinement and superior intelligence, always wearing a frock coat and was called a "gentleman" His mild and pleasing manners won him many friends and he was a most respected and esteemed citizen. In 1836 he was elected one of the county commissioners and under his administration the Hamilton street bridge, over the Jordan was built. He was a schoolteacher for many years in this county. His wife. Hannah, was a daughter of Peter Beisel who lived near Catasauqua being the father of 13 children, eight of whom were daughters Mrs. Sherer was born April 27, 1795, and died Sept. 25, 1880, aged 85 years. He died March 22, 1863, aged 71 years. Both are buried at the Mickley's church, of which they were Lutheran members. Their children, now all deceased except the youngest daughter, were: Henry, Edward. Josiah and Eliza, who married John Seipel and they moved by team to Mercer county, Pa., then called the "West"; Miranda who died in Jan. 1913, in her 86th year. She was the widow of Josiah Lentz; Clarissa married W. Schadt, and Hannah married Henry Roth who lived in Allentown at the time of his death.
