Educated in local schools; started teaching at fifteen; attended Eastmann Business College at Poughkeepsie, N. Y.; after graduation became ticket agent for Philadelphia and Reading RE. Co.at East Penn Junction; in Sept. 1877 bought interest in Friedens-Bote and Welt Bote, published under firm name of E. D. Leisenring and Co.; in 1882 the firm name became Trexler and Hartzell and in 1893, after Trexler's retirement, Hartzell and Weaber; business for many years included book store and wall paper store; in partnership with Wm. E. McCormick and brother-in-law, Wm. F. Weaber, started the Allentown Leader on Aug. 28, 1893, with which he continued for years; councilman and school director; water commissioner; leader of Democratic party in county; as associate to Tom L. Johnson and Albert L. Johnson director of Lehigh Valley Traction Co.; assisted in founding and development of electric light company; with Fred Lewis, Major Dougherty and George O. Albright one of founders of Lehigh Telephone Co.; one of founders and up to death director of Lehigh Valley Trust Co.; stockholder for 50 years in Lehigh County Agricultural Society; Mason; member of St. John's Reformed Church.
