Capt. William H. Steckel, fifth son of Solomon, Jr., was born at Egypt, 6/16/1841. He worked upon the home farm, alternated with attendance at the public schools, until twenty years of age, when, at the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private in Company G, forty-seventh PA Regiment, on 9/18/1861, and served in campaigns in Florida, South Carolina Louisiana and the Shenandoah Valley. Hewas promoted to sereant on 11/1/1864. and to first lieutenant on 1/1/1865. After Captain Goebel'sdeath from wounds received at Cedar Creek, when Thos. B. Leisenring became captain. He was brevetted captain in action and mustered out 12/25/1865. After the war he was for some years a farmer, but later was a slater, until compelled to retired by various infirmities. He was a member of the G. A. R. and the Union Veteran Legion. He died at Allentown where he had removed in 1890, on 11/14/1901. He married in 1806, Elizabeth Green, of Charleston, S. C., still living in Allentown.
