Scion of one of Lehigh County's oldest families, Mrs. S. Gertrude Schantz, wife of Attorney J. Thomas Schantz, died in the Sacred Heart Hospital on the evening of May 9, 1938, after an illness of six months.

Mrs. Schanix was born in Whitehall Township, just north of Allentown's present city limits, and was a daughter of Franklin and Susan Koehler. After public school work, in her young maidenhood she attended Allentown College for Women, now Cedar Crest College, and was one of its most prominent alumnae in the work of the college auxiliary.

She also served on the women's advisory board of Bethany Orphans Home at Wommelsdorf, was a member of the auxiliary of the Phoebe Home and was a member of the Woman's Club of Allentown.

She left her husband, a sister and two brothers, all of Allentown, to mourn her loss. These were: Emma J., Joseph H., and 'William A. Koehler. A sister, who was the wife of Lyman Howe, a pioneer in the motion picture industry in America, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Dr. Simon Sipple, and interment was made in Union Cemetery.
