MacMURRAY FRANK GOODNOW MacMURRAY (Age 91) A founding partner of Foxhall Internists in Washington, DC, and a longtime clinical professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, died peacefully at age 91 at The Sylvestery, McLean, VA, on January 25, 2010. Born in Beijing, China, on September 29, 1918, he was the son of Lois Goodnow MacMurray and John Van Antwerp MacMurray, a career diplomat and China specialist. As a boy he traveled widely to and from his father's ambassadorial posts which included the Baltic States and Turkey, and he never lost his pleasure in exploring foreign lands. He attended Gilman School in Baltimore, and graduated from Princeton University in 1940. Initially headed for a career in the Foreign Service, he instead enrolled at Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1943, with a commission in the Army Air Force. Returning to Baltimore after the war, he completed his internship at Johns Hopkins University, and then a residency in internal medicine at Mt. Alto, a Veterans Administration hospital in Washington. He worked briefly with Dr. Worth Daniels, a Washington internist, and then joined Dr. Wesley Oler to form the medical practice now known as Foxhall Internists, one of Washington's foremost primary medical care practices. He retired from active practice in 1993, but for many years thereafter remained active at Georgetown Medical School. His specialty was internal medicine, but his medical reach extended widely. He was the school physician for The Madeira School. He was a one-time president of the Clinical and Climatological Society, a local organization honoring distinguished area physicians, as well as Governor of the American College of Physicians, which honored in 1994 by naming a Master of the College. Dr. MacMurray was a beloved physician, valued as much for his kindness to patients and colleagues as for his diagnostic skills. Dr. Alec Chester, currently the senior partner at Foxhall Internists, remembers, "He set an admirable standard as the founder and leader of our office, but most important to me, his father-like warmth, his guidance, and especially, his gentle wit made me look forward to coming to work. He was everything a physician and a person should be." He married Rose Chatfield-Taylor in 1941. They shared interests in literature, language, history, music, travel and a love of family until her death in 1997. He is survived by sons, Frank G. MacMurray, Jr. of Portland, Oregon and Worth Daniels MacMurray of McLean, Virginia; daughter, Adelaide (Lolly) MacMurray-Cooper of Cambridge, MA; his sister Lois MacMurray Starkey of Brookline, MA; two granddaughters; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; innumerable friends and legions of grateful patients. A memorial service is planned for next September in McLean. He spent the final four years of his life at The Sylvestery in McLean. Their skilled and caring staff, many of whom are young people from overseas, working and studying in the medical field, contributed significantly to his comfort and well-being. The family would like to honor Dr. MacMurray, and the Sylvestery staff, by establishing the Frank G. MacMurray MD Fund for Medical Education (Sylvestery). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the MacMurray Sylvestery Fund, 7208 Thrasher Road, McLean, VA, 22101.
