ALFRED J. KERN, miller at Slatington, son of Charles Kern, was born in 1847, and remained upon the homestead until he attained his majority. He learned the milling trade when 18 years old. He was employed for a year in the old Custard Mill near Slatington and three years in the mill at Germanville. In 1872, he rented his present mill and operated it until 1877, when he purchased it from the Henry Kuntz estate, since which time it has been operated under his management. In 1903, Mr. Kern built his fine residence at Main and Diamond streets, where stood the original Kern Mill mentioned in the Indian Wars. He and his family are, members of St. John's Reformed church, which he has served as deacon.

He was married in 1871 to Fietta Snyder, daughter of Eli Snyder, of Pleasant Corner.
