PAUL C. KERN, the youngest son of Conrad and Polly (Snyder) Kern, was born Jan. 7, 1836. He worked for various farmers of his neighborhood until about twenty years of age. He then bought a farm near what is now Best P. O., of 6o acres, where after five years he sold out, and built a brick house at "Peter's Store," in 1864. In that year he removed to Lizard Creek Valley, where he purchased a farm of 60 acres, farmed two years, then built a saw-mill, which he operated. In 1869 he sold this property and moved into his house at Peter's Store. He burned lime in Whitehall some years, then operated a saw mill in Washington township for many years. Later he operated a steam saw mill and followed the lumber business about twelve years. He retired from active work in 1906 and his son succeeded to his business. He became a member of the Heidelberg Reformed church. Paul C. Kern married in 1857, Maria Rauch, daughter of Joshua Rauch.
