At age of 17 came to Allentown; apprentice four years with George Spinner to learn cabinet-making trade; thereafter entered lumber office of Solomon Gangewere, whose daughter he married; after fire of 1848 he entered into partnership with Reuben Guth and B. F. Trexler in publishing Der Lecha Patriot; active on Patriot from 1849 to March 6, 1852; was business manager of firm; when firm opened book and stationery store he became its manager; after retiring from Patriot he entered firm of Lochman and Leh, engaged in boot and shoe and hat business; bought Lochman's interest; firm name then became Young and Leh; in 1867 Mr. Leh sold share to John E. Lentz as partner; during Civil War had large contracts for manufacture of government shoes; in Feb. 1872 retired from business; Presbyterian; elder at time of death; Republican; on board of control; several terms on city council.
