US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced the practice of law in Lenoir, North Carolina. He was a member of the State House of Representatives in 1882 and served in the State Senate in 1884. In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed legal practice until his death.
