From History of Eastern Vermont. Citizens of Guilford were opposed to the government of Vermont separating from N.Y. Being loyal to N.Y. many suffered fines, imprisonment, & seizure of property. A petition was sent to the N.Y. Legislature seeking relief. The N.Y. legislature agreed to set aside land of 8 square miles. It was agreed that a tract of land bought from the Indians in 1768 included 40,960 acres, to be allotted to the sufferers of the pretended State of Vermont in a ratio proportionate to their losses. The land was named Jericho Township. In 1814 it became Bainbridge. Ichabod Packer received 214 acres on July 11, 1786.
