Virginia Margaret McBride was born in Colorado on 20 December 1893. She is the elder daughter of Robert D McBride and Amanda (Anderson) McBride. Her younger sister isOlivia M (McBride) Wilson.
In the 1900 US Census Virginia is 6 years old, Olivia is 4 years old, and both sisters live with their parents in San Luis Obispo, California. In the 1910 US Census the teenage sisters live with their parents in Wilmington, California. On 17 July 1913 then 19 year old Virginia McBride married George R Swindle in Los Angeles. Their son, Richard R Swindle, was born on 12 February 1916 in Los Angeles, California.
The marriage failed. In the 1920 US Census 26 year old Virginia M Swindle and her son 3 year 11 month old Richard R Swindle live with her sister and parents in Los Angeles, California. The 1920 census records the sisters, in their mid-20s, each employed as stenographers, Virginia in a doctor's office, Olivia at a movie studio.
In 1927 Virginia McBride Hodge and her second husband William L Hodge are listed as witnesses on the Los Angeles County Marriage Certificate for the wedding of her sister Olivia M McBride and Roy R Wilson. In the 1930 US Census Virginia M Hodge is listed as wife in the William L Hodge household, with 14 year old Robert M Hodge listed as step-son. The census reports that William married Virginia in 1921, but a civil record of the wedding has not been found. Also missing is the legal record documenting her son's name change from Richard R Swindle to Robert McBride Hodge.
Robert D McBride, father of Olivia and Virginia, died in December 1934 at the age of 81. In the 1940 US Census Virginia and William Hodge live alone in Wilmington, California, while Robert M Hodge lives in the Los Angeles household of his Aunt Olivia, who became a widow in 1934 when her husband Roy Wilson died at the age of 43.
On 10 August 1940 Robert M Hodge married Emma Jean Ryan in Glendale, California.
Olivia and Virginia's mother Amanda McBride died in Long Beach, California on 23 November 1946. Virginia M Hodge is the informant on Amanda McBride's death certificate.
William L Hodge died in 1956 in Wilmington, survived by his wife Virginia and his step-son Robert M Hodge. Virginia M Hodge is the informant on William L Hodge's death certificate. William L Hodge is buried in Wilmington Cemetery.
Virginia M Hodge died on 29 September 1979, and is buried in Wilmington Cemetery, survived by her son Robert M Hodge and her grandson, also named Robert M Hodge.
