"'H. R. McKee Dies At Slaton Home'
Slaton, May 14, (Special) - Hiram R. McKee, 63, superintendent of the Slaton division of the Santa Fe railway from Oct. 1, 1938, until this month, and prior to that a longtime railroad official in other locations, died about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at his residence here. Funeral services will be conducted in the Slaton Presbyterian church at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and interment will follow in Lubbock cemetery, under direction of Rix Funeral home. The body will remain at the funeral home at Lubbock until shortly before time for funeral services. Mr. McKee retired May 1 after several months' ill health. -Born in Ohio- He was born July 18, 1881, at Bloomville, O. He began railroad work as station helper at Bloomville, in May, 1895. His career with the Santa Fe opened at Las Vegas, N. M., Nov. 1, 1910. He was train dispatcher, and in 1913 was promoted to train master. He took leave to enlist in the Army and served with the 39th railroad engineers battalion in France in 1918 and was a captain at time he left the Army. He went to Raton, N. M., in April 1919. He was appointed assistant superintendent at Dodge City, Kas., in 1921, was named superintendent of the river division at LaJunta, Colo., March 1, 1927, superintendent of the New Mexico division in June, 1928, and was transferred to the Slaton division 10 years later. -With Other Railroads- He also formerly was with the M-K-T railroad in Kansas, the Great Northern in Minnesota, and the Union Pacific at Evanston, Wyo., at all those places as train dispatcher. His survivors include his wife, two sons, Capt. John McKee, who is with the Army Air forces in Africa and who recently returned overseas, and Bob McKee of Denver, and one daughter, Mrs. Richard Robbins of Denver."
