Nellie was also somewhat of a social worker during those days, teaching young mothers how to wash their babies and showing adults how to keep themselves clean. Nellie was a lover of cats and she enjoyed fishing very much. Nellie was a member of the Westbrook (CT) Congregational Church and of the Golden Rule Club of Westbrook. She died after a long illness of a cerebral vascular hemorrhage (stroke).

Also: Family moved to Sioux Falls, So. Dakota where she taught school in a 1-room schoolhouse. Father ran a grist mill which burned to the ground. Moved south - lived in a sod house. Family moved back East. Educated young mothers on child care. Taught special education at the Marion Hooker school in Hartford.
