He and Hoogie are buried in the McKee plot at Fairview Cemetary.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1923 and was a career Navy man, retiring with the rank of Captain. He served 18 years at sea and was in charge of the evacuation of Americans from Shanghai by sea when the Communists took over in 1949. He spent shore duties as an instructor at the Naval Academy as well as at Yale, the University of Michigan and R.P.I. in Troy, New York. He was head of the Electrical Engineering and Physics Department at the Naval Academy for one tour. He married Edith Duncan on November 23, 1928 in Pelham Manor, New York. Wells was the initial Field Family historian, having put together a hand written family chart booklet of the Descendants of David Dudley Field Sr. and his wife, Submit Dickinson. His notes and records were passed on to Diane Druin Gravlee in the 1960's and she carried on the work.
