. Ruth spent the first year of her childhood in Parryville and moved to Jefferson County, near Birmingham, where her father James was involved in the iron industry. At the age of nine, she moved with her family to Catasauqua. She attended boarding school in Hackettstown, New Jersey. As a young woman Ruth was very artistic and she did lovely paintings that were copies of well-known Victorian artists. These paintings hung in the family home in Catasauqua and were great favorites of the grandchildren, recalls granddaughter Dr. Ruth Thomas McVey, as they depicted dramatic scenes with wildlife. Grandmother Ruth would tell the stories behind the paintings and the grandchildren would be reduced to tears.
